Two critical security vulnerabilities have recently been discovered in PHP, a technology used by millions of websites worldwide, including those built with WordPress.
The vulnerabilities, collectively known as PHP2Shell, could allow attackers to gain control of vulnerable website servers without needing a password.
Security updates have been released, but businesses using affected systems need to ensure they have been applied.
What Does This Mean for Your Website?
If your business website uses WordPress or another PHP-based platform, it may be affected.
Importantly, updating WordPress alone may not resolve the issue. The underlying PHP software running on your web hosting server must also be updated.
If you’re unsure whether your website uses PHP, your hosting provider or website developer should be able to confirm.
Are All Websites Affected?
No. Websites use different technologies, and not all rely on PHP.
For example, modern static websites can deliver pages without running server-side PHP code, removing exposure to these particular vulnerabilities.
This doesn’t make them immune to cyber attacks, but it demonstrates why choosing the right technology can improve security and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements.
What Should Your Business Do?
If you’re concerned about your website’s security:
- Check your hosting: Confirm whether your website uses PHP and whether the latest security updates have been applied.
- Review older websites: Sites that haven’t been maintained for several years may be running outdated software.
- Consider your website’s architecture: Modern alternatives may offer better performance, simpler maintenance and a smaller security footprint, depending on your requirements.
Is It Time to Review Your Website?
Website technology has evolved considerably in recent years. If your business is running an older website, it may be worth considering whether the technology behind it is still the best fit.
At Rabbit MSP, we can help assess your existing website and discuss modern alternatives that may improve security, performance and reliability.
